Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a tiny living thing called a bacterium.

It is found almost everywhere in our world. You can find it in soil and in water. It also lives on human skin. This bacterium is very important to doctors because it can cause many illnesses. It is known for being very strong against medicines.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa antibiotic susceptibility

Scientists call this being multidrug resistant. This means it is hard for medicine to work against it. The bacterium can even stop medicine from entering its outer layer.

This bacterium has a very interesting way of working. It is a facultative anaerobe, which means it can live with or without oxygen. It can grow in places where there is very little air. To survive, it uses different things for food. It can even use nitrate or nitrite to help it grow when oxygen is gone. It also uses special molecules called siderophores to find iron. Iron is a nutrient it needs to grow, but it is hard to find in nature.

Some bacteria work together to share this iron, while others act as cheaters.

Scientists have studied this bacterium for a long time. The name Pseudomonas comes from Greek words meaning "false unit." The second part of its name, aeruginosa, comes from a Latin word for copper rust. This is because the bacterium makes blue-green colors in a lab. These colors come from two special substances called pyocyanin and pyoverdine.

When it grows, it also makes a sweet smell. This smell is like grapes because of a substance called 2-aminoacetophenone.

There are many facts about how this bacterium behaves. It has a large circular chromosome with many genes. A study in 2020 looked at 494 different Pseudomonas genomes. It found that P. aeruginosa is very diverse. It can also form biofilms, which are thick layers of bacteria that stick together. These biofilms can be found in the lungs of people with cystic fibrosis.

These layers make it very hard for the body to fight the infection.

This bacterium links to many things we see in daily life. It loves moist surfaces, so it can be found in soap and hot tubs. This is why it can cause a "hot tub rash" on your skin. In hospitals, it can live on medical tools like catheters. It can also help the planet in a good way. This bacterium can break down oil and tar from big oil spills.

It is a very versatile living thing that can live in many different places.
