Legionella pneumophila is a tiny bacterium that can cause a serious illness. This germ is the main cause of Legionnaires’ disease.

It is a Gram-negative bacterium, which means it has a special outer membrane. This membrane is made of proteins and fats. It also has unique sugars called lipopolysaccharides. These sugars help the germ stick to host cells. Because it is so good at sticking, it can be quite hard to stop.

The way this bacterium works is very clever. It has two different forms to help it survive. One form is called the transmissive phase. This form is used when food is hard to find in the environment. It acts like a spore to help the germ travel. The second form is the replicative phase. This form is used to make many more bacteria.

The germ switches between these forms based on how much food is available. This helps it thrive in many different places.

This bacterium loves to live in water. It can grow in many man-made water systems. You might find it in cooling towers or large hotels.

It often hides inside biofilms. A biofilm is a sticky layer of living things on a surface. The germ can also live inside tiny water bugs called protozoa. Living inside these bugs protects the germ from stress. This makes it very hard for disinfectants like chlorine to kill it.

Sometimes, the germ gets into the air through water droplets. These tiny sprays are called aerosols. If a person breathes in these droplets, the germ enters the lungs. It then moves into special cells called alveolar macrophages.

This can lead to Legionnaires' disease. A person might feel a fever or have diarrhea. Doctors can find the germ using a urine antigen test. They can treat the illness with antibiotics like azithromycin.

Scientists have studied this germ to learn how it adapts. They have looked at the genomes of several different strains.

These include strains named Philadelphia, Paris, and Lens. The genome of this bacterium is about 3.5 mega base pairs. This large genome helps it live in many different environments. It also helps the germ change quickly through a process called horizontal gene transfer. This process can even help the germ become resistant to medicines.
