Antimicrobial resistance, or AMR, is a major global health threat. It happens when tiny living things called microbes change to protect themselves from medicines. These medicines, known as antimicrobials, are used to treat infections in humans, animals, and plants. AMR affects many types of microbes, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. When bacteria become resistant to the drugs meant to kill them, it is called antibiotic resistance. This makes common illnesses much harder to treat.

There are a few ways this resistance works. Sometimes, a tiny change called a mutation happens when a microbe makes copies of itself. These changes can help an individual microbe survive medicine. Other times, microbes use horizontal gene transfer to share resistance. This is like passing a secret instruction manual to a neighbor. They can do this through processes called conjugation, transduction, or transformation. This allows resistance to spread quickly between different microbes.

Human activities often speed up this natural process. Using too many antimicrobials or using them the wrong way is a primary driver. For example, up to 46 million antibiotic prescriptions in a year may be unnecessary. When people stop taking medicine too early, the strongest microbes might stay in the body. They can then multiply and spread. This misuse happens in both medicine and agriculture.

The scale of this problem is very large. In 2019, bacterial AMR was directly responsible for 1.27 million deaths globally. It also contributed to nearly 5 million total deaths that year. One in five people who died from AMR were children under five. The World Health Organization warns that deaths could reach 10 million every year by 2050. Different areas face different levels of risk. For instance, Sub-Saharan Africa has a rate of 23.7 deaths per 100,000 people.

To fight AMR, experts use a method called the One Health approach. This idea shows that the health of people, animals, and the environment are all connected. We must work together across many different groups. This includes doctors, farmers, and researchers. We can help by using the right dose of medicine and keeping things clean. Improving hygiene and finding new vaccines are also vital steps.
