When germs change, they become resistant. This means the medicine no longer works. Resistance is a trait of the germ, not the person.

Germs change in a few ways. Sometimes, a tiny change happens when they make copies of themselves. We call this a mutation. Other times, germs share secrets. They pass pieces of DNA to each other. This is called horizontal gene transfer. This helps the resistance spread fast.

Human actions make this happen faster. Using too much medicine or using it the wrong way helps germs adapt. This is a big problem for the world. It makes common sicknesses harder to treat. It also makes medical care more costly. Experts say we must work together to stop it. We can use medicine carefully and keep things clean. This helps keep people, animals, and the land healthy.
