life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A urinary tract infection is often called a UTI. It happens when germs get into the urinary tract. This system includes the bladder, the urethra, and the kidneys.

Most UTIs are caused by a germ called E. coli. These germs usually enter through the urethra. Once inside, they can stick to the bladder wall. They may even make a biofilm. A biofilm is a layer that helps germs stay put.

Symptoms can change depending on where the germs are. A lower UTI affects the bladder or urethra. This can cause pain or a burning feeling when peeing. You might also feel a strong urge to pee.

An upper UTI affects the kidneys. This is called pyelonephritis. It can cause fever or pain in the side. Sometimes, the urine may look bloody or contain pus.

Doctors treat most UTIs with antibiotics. These are medicines that kill germs. Some cases need a longer course of medicine. About 400 million cases happen every year. Many women get them, especially between ages 16 and 35.
