It serves as the flagship studio for the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. This group is part of NBCUniversal, which is a subsidiary of Comcast. Headquartered in Universal City, California, the company is a member of the Motion Picture Association. Universal is one of the "Big Five" major film studios in the industry. It also holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving film studio in the United States.

The studio operates through a complex system of production and management. In its early years, Universal utilized a model called vertical integration. This meant the company controlled movie production, distribution, and exhibition venues within one entity. This structure was a central element of the Studio system era. Universal also manages several different branches under its larger corporate umbrella. These include Focus Features, Working Title Films, and Universal Animation Studios. It also holds a 50% stake in United International Pictures and a 20% stake in Amblin Partners. Other members of the group include Illumination and DreamWorks Animation.

To help theater owners and audiences understand their films, Universal once used a three-tier branding system. This system categorized releases into three distinct types based on budget and ambition. The first tier consisted of Red Feather Photoplays, which were low-budget feature films. The second tier included Bluebird Photoplays, which were more mainstream and ambitious productions. The third tier featured Jewel productions, which were prestige motion pictures. These Jewel films used high budgets and prominent actors to attract viewers.

By the mid-1920s, the studio began branding its most expensive films as "Super-Jewel" productions.

The history of Universal began with a group of entrepreneurs in the early 20th century. Carl Laemmle was a primary founder alongside partners like Mark Dintenfass and Charles O. Baumann. Laemmle originally worked with nickelodeons and the Independent Moving Pictures Company (IMP). He sought to avoid the Motion Picture Patents Company, often called the "Edison Trust." The Trust attempted to enforce a monopoly by collecting fees on all aspects of production. To bypass these fees, Laemmle and others began producing their own independent pictures. On April 30, 1912, the Universal Film Manufacturing Company was officially incorporated in New York City.

Laemmle was a significant innovator who helped create the modern "star system." Before this era, it was common practice to refuse screen credits to performers. Laemmle broke this custom by naming movie stars in his marketing efforts. In 1910, he promoted actors like Florence Lawrence and King Baggot to attract audiences. On March 15, 1915, the company opened Universal City Studios on a 230-acre converted farm.

This facility was the largest motion picture production center in the world at that time. Unlike other studio moguls, Laemmle also opened his studio to tourists.

Throughout its history, the studio has experienced both massive success and significant challenges. In the 1920s, the studio faced near bankruptcy due to high production costs. Actor-director Erich von Stroheim insisted on lavish spending for films like *Foolish Wives*. However, the studio managed to gain returns through sensational advertising campaigns. Universal also saw shifts in leadership, such as the influential period under Irving Thalberg. After Thalberg left for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1922, Universal became a second-tier studio for several decades. Despite these shifts, the studio produced legendary films like *Jaws* and *E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial*. These titles became the highest-grossing films of all time during their initial releases.

Universal's impact extends to various genres and global markets. The studio has developed some of the most successful film franchises, including *Fast & Furious*, *Jurassic Park*, and *Despicable Me*. It also has a history in animation, once working with creators like Walter Lantz. Lantz eventually found success with the character Woody Woodpecker in 1940. The studio even maintained an international presence through Deutsche Universal-Film AG in Germany.

While that specific subsidiary eventually dissolved due to political changes in Europe, the studio's legacy of storytelling remains a massive part of global culture. Today, Universal continues to connect with audiences through a vast library of diverse films.
