This group helps manage many different types of movies. Today, the studio is based in Universal City, California. It is a place where many stories come to life.

Making movies involves many different steps and types of films. In the early days, Universal used a three-tier system to label its work. They made "Red Feather" films, which were low-budget features. They also made "Bluebird" films, which were more ambitious and mainstream. The most expensive films were called "Jewel" productions.

These used famous actors and high budgets to impress audiences. Later, they even called these top films "Super-Jewel" productions. This helped theater owners know exactly what kind of movie they were getting.

The history of the studio began over a hundred years ago.

Carl Laemmle helped found the company on April 30, 1912. He worked with several partners like Mark Dintenfass and Charles O. Baumann. Laemmle wanted to make his own movies to avoid paying high fees to others. He even helped start the "star system" by giving names to actors.

By naming stars, he made people want to see their films. This changed how movies were sold to the public.

Universal has many famous names and numbers in its history. On March 15, 1915, they opened Universal City on a 230-acre farm.
