Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, commonly known as MGM, is a major American film and television production and distribution company.

Headquartered in Culver City, California, the studio has played a central role in the history of Hollywood. It is recognized for producing prestigious films, popular musicals, and major entertainment franchises. For much of the twentieth century, MGM was considered the most dominant motion picture studio in the industry. Today, it operates as a subsidiary of Amazon MGM Studios, following its acquisition by Amazon.

The studio's operation involves a complex process of production, distribution, and technical management. In its early years, MGM managed everything from movie lots to technical production facilities and theaters. The studio was a pioneer in adopting new cinematic technologies to improve the viewer experience. For example, it was among the first to experiment with Technicolor, a process that added vibrant color to films.

MGM also navigated the difficult transition from silent films to "talkies," or films with synchronized sound. Its first major success in the sound era was the musical *The Broadway Melody*, which won an Academy Award for Best Picture. This transition required significant changes in how actors performed and how films were recorded.

MGM's history is defined by its diverse eras of production and ownership. Its most prosperous period lasted from 1926 to 1959, a span of time framed by two different productions of the epic *Ben Hur*. During this era, the studio focused on high-quality features and a massive roster of contract players. The studio famously used the slogan "more stars than there are in heaven" to highlight its talent. This included legendary actors like Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy.

The studio also produced short films, such as comedy shorts and series involving trained animals.

The company was founded on April 17, 1924, by businessman Marcus Loew. Loew sought to create a steady supply of high-quality films for his Loew's Theatres chain. To achieve this, he merged three separate entities: Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Pictures.

This merger brought together different resources, including the Goldwyn studio lot and the famous lion logo. Louis B. Mayer became the head of the new company, while Irving Thalberg served as the head of production. This leadership team helped the studio produce over 100 feature films within its first two years of operation.

Ownership of MGM has shifted frequently due to complex financial and corporate deals. In 1969, investor Kirk Kerkorian bought 40% of the studio and changed its direction significantly. He reduced film output to about five films per year and diversified into the hospitality industry by creating MGM Resorts International. In 1986, Ted Turner purchased the company, though he later sold the studio back to Kerkorian after retaining the film library. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the studio faced heavy debt following various acquisitions and sales.

In 2005, a consortium including Sony Pictures acquired the company.

Financial challenges eventually led to a major reorganization of the studio. In 2010, MGM filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to manage its $4 billion debt. The company emerged later that year under the ownership of its creditors. Following this reorganization, new management took charge of the production and television divisions. In May 2021, Amazon reached an agreement to acquire MGM, a deal that officially closed in March 2022.

This acquisition led to the rebranding of Amazon Studios as Amazon MGM Studios in late 2023.

MGM remains a significant force in modern media through its vast library and recent productions. Its most commercially successful franchises include the *James Bond* and *Rocky* series. The studio also produces contemporary television content, such as *Fargo* and *The Handmaid's Tale*. By connecting the early days of Hollywood to the modern streaming era, MGM continues to influence how stories are told and shared globally.
