While visiting her sister in 1940, a professional photographer took her portrait. A legal clerk named Barnard Duhan saw the portrait in a Fifth Avenue studio. He suggested the image be sent to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, also known as MGM. Gardner was interviewed by Al Altman, the head of MGM's New York talent department. Altman filmed her walking and arranging flowers to see how she moved on camera. Although her strong Southern accent was difficult to understand, MGM head Louis B. Mayer famously declared her "terrific."

Her early life in North Carolina was shaped by the Great Depression.
