A tyrant is a ruler who holds absolute power. This person does not follow the laws of the land. They might take power by force instead of following the usual rules. In ancient Greece, the word meant something a bit different. The term was "tyrannos," which meant a ruler. At first, it was a neutral word for anyone who took power in a new way. These leaders often gained support from different groups. Some had help from the middle class or peasants. Others used soldiers from outside their city to stay in charge.

History shows us many different types of tyrants. In Corinth, a man named Cypselus became a leader in the 600s BC. His rule helped the city grow rich through trade. His son, Periander, took over after him. Periander was much more brutal than his father. In Athens, a leader named Peisistratos rose to power in 546 BC. He was popular because he built public works and festivals. However, his son Hipparchus was later killed by two men named Aristogeiton and Harmodios.

In Sicily, tyrants rose up because of the threat of war. Leaders like Dionysius the Elder used military strength to rule. In Rome, people saw tyranny as the opposite of liberty. Roman historians often wrote about tyrants who took too much power from the Senate. Some even identified tyrants in religious histories, such as Herod the Great.

They said a tyrant only works for his own interests. This idea shows that how a leader uses power matters most. It is not just about having power, but about using it fairly.
