In ancient Greece, the word meant something different. It just meant a leader who took power in a new way. Some tyrants had help from the middle class. Others used soldiers to stay in charge.

In the city of Corinth, a man named Cypselus became a tyrant. He was a good leader. His rule helped the city grow rich. His son, Periander, took over next. He was much less kind to his people.

Athens also had tyrants. One leader was named Peisistratos. He was popular because he built many things. He even helped start great festivals. But his son, Hipparchus, was killed by two men. They were called the tyrannicides.

Later, in Rome, people saw tyranny as the opposite of liberty. They believed a good leader works for the people. A tyrant only works for himself. Philosophers like Plato said tyranny is the worst way to rule. They believed it is a misuse of power.
