An autocracy is a way of ruling a country where one person holds all the power. This person is called an autocrat.

In this system, the leader has total control over civil liberties. These are the rights and freedoms that people usually enjoy. An autocrat can decide if people get to use these rights or not. This is different from a democracy, where power is shared. Some governments are mixed, which people sometimes call an anocracy.

To keep control, autocrats use several different methods. They often work with powerful people in society known as elites. If the autocrat has the support of these elites, they can rule more easily. They might also use propaganda to share specific ideas with the public. This is a way to shape what people think about the government. Some leaders even hold unfair elections to look like a democracy. These are sometimes called electoral autocracies.

Autocracy is one of the oldest ways to organize a society. In the ancient world, many different groups used this system. For most of history, the most common type was a monarchy. In a monarchy, power often stays within a single family. This is called hereditary succession, where children follow their parents.

Later, in the 1800s, dictatorships became more common. Examples include the leaders known as caudillos in Latin America.

In the 20th century, new types of rule began to appear. These included fascist and communist states, which are called totalitarian dictatorships.

The word autocracy comes from Ancient Greek words. One part means "self" and the other means "power." In ancient times, this was a title for Roman emperors. In Russia, the title for the emperor was also very important. Different languages have used different words to describe these rulers.

Staying in power can be a very hard job for an autocrat. The biggest threat often comes from inside their own government. If the elites stop supporting the leader, a coup d'état might happen. This is a sudden change where the government is overthrown.

Autocrats may try to stay in power by using religion or ideology. They might also claim they are needed to keep the country safe. Some leaders even use a "cult of personality" to gain support. This makes the leader seem very important to the whole nation.
