An absolute monarchy is a way of ruling a country. In this system, one person holds all the political power. This leader is called a sovereign. They do not have to follow a constitution or a group of lawmakers. They can make laws and also act as a judge. No other officials can limit what they decide to do.

This kind of power works in many different ways. Some leaders say their power comes from a divine right. This means they believe a god chose them to rule. In the Ottoman Empire, the Sultan was called a "Great King." In China, emperors used the Mandate of Heaven to rule. The Inca ruler was seen as the son of the sun god.

Many famous leaders used this power in history. Louis XIV ruled France for a very long time. He held the power to make or cancel any law. He was also the highest judge in the land. In Prussia, Frederick the Great was an absolute monarch. He used his power to help his people in new ways. He started a better school system and ended torture.

History shows that these rules changed over many years. In Denmark-Norway, a written law gave the king total power in 1665. In Russia, the tsars ruled as absolute monarchs until 1905. Peter the Great was a famous Russian leader who built a strong central government. Later, the Romanov family ruled for three hundred years. The last emperor of Austria, Charles I, stepped down in 1918.

Some places still use this system today. Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy where the King follows Islamic law. In Oman, the Sultan is the head of state and the head of government. Vatican City is a very small state with its own unique way. The Pope is the absolute monarch there. He is elected by a special group called a papal conclave.
