To keep the towns from running into each other, there are green belts. These are strips of nature that sit on the edges of the urban areas. These green spaces help separate places like South Tyneside, Gateshead, and Sunderland. The coastline in the east is very interesting to see. It meets the North Sea and features wide beaches. You can also find tall limestone cliffs along the coast.

The history of how this county is run has changed many times. In the late 600s, a monk named St. Bede lived in a monastery here. Later, in 1888, new laws made cities like Newcastle and Sunderland county boroughs. These were areas with their own local government. In 1974, the modern county of Tyne and Wear was finally created. It was made from parts of Northumberland and County Durham.

Even the name was decided by a vote to make sure everyone was happy.

Today, the county is divided into five main boroughs. These are Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, North Tyneside, and South Tyneside. They work together through the North East Combined Authority. This group also includes councils from Durham and Northumberland. They help manage big jobs that affect the whole region. One part of this group is Nexus, which looks after public transport. They are the ones in charge of the Tyne and Wear Metro.
