County Durham is a special place in North East England.

It sits near the North Sea to the east. To the north, it borders Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. North Yorkshire is to the south, and Cumbria is to the west. The land changes a lot depending on where you stand. The west has high hills in the North Pennines. These hills are a national landscape. They are the starting point for two rivers. These are the River Tees and the River Wear.

The rivers flow through the land in different ways. The Wear flows east through a valley called Weardale. The Tees flows east through a valley called Teesdale. The Tees eventually forms a border with North Yorkshire. In the east, the land becomes much flatter. The rivers meander through this flat ground. The coast is very different from the hills. It has tall cliffs made of limestone and dolomite.

These cliffs are a site of special scientific interest.

The history of this land goes back a long way. It was once part of Roman Britain. You can still see sites like Binchester Roman Fort. Later, it was part of the Kingdom of Northumbria. In 995, monks founded the city of Durham. They wanted a safe place for the relics of St Cuthbert. They chose a spot protected by a horseshoe curve in the River Wear.

Later, the Bishops of Durham ruled the area. They ran it almost like their own private land. This was called the County Palatine of Durham.

Many important things happened here in the past. The city of Durham has a famous cathedral and castle. Together, they are now a World Heritage Site.

In the nineteenth century, the area changed again. It became a place for heavy industry. Many coal mines, called collieries, opened on the Durham coalfield.

A huge moment happened in 1825. The Stockton and Darlington Railway opened then. It was the first public railway to use steam locomotives.

Today, people still connect with this history. Most coal mines closed in the late twentieth century. However, the memory of the miners stays alive. People celebrate this at the annual Durham Miners' Gala.

Many people live in the towns and cities here. Darlington is the largest settlement in the county. Other big places include Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees. The city of Durham sits in the north-centre. The east and centre are much more crowded than the west.
