It serves as a major urban hub within the region. The county borders Northumberland to the north and County Durham to the south. It covers a total area of 540 square kilometres. As of 2024, the estimated population reached 1,178,389 people. Most of the land is highly urbanised. This means the landscape is filled with towns and cities rather than open countryside.

The geography is defined by two major rivers. The River Tyne and the River Wear provide the county its name. These waterways shaped where major settlements grew. Newcastle upon Tyne sits on the north bank of the Tyne. Gateshead is located directly opposite on the south bank.

In the east, South Shields sits at the mouth of the Tyne. The city of Sunderland is located in the south-east. Sunderland sits near the mouth of the River Wear.

To manage the large population, the county uses several layers of government. Since 1986, it has been governed by five metropolitan boroughs. These are Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, North Tyneside, and South Tyneside. These boroughs collaborate through the North East Combined Authority. This authority was established in 2024 to provide a strategic forum. It includes the councils of Durham and Northumberland as well. The authority has eight voting members. One is a directly elected mayor, and the others are councillors. Kim McGuinness is the current mayor.

Public transport is a vital part of the county's infrastructure. Nexus is the passenger transport executive for Tyne and Wear. It is an executive body of the North East Combined Authority. Nexus manages many aspects of public transport. One of its most important responsibilities is the Tyne and Wear Metro.

The county also maintains green belts to manage urban sprawl. These are protected areas of nature interspersed throughout the county. They are mainly found on the fringes of the Tyneside and Wearside conurbations. One specific belt helps separate South Tyneside, Gateshead, and Sunderland. These belts were first established in the 1950s.

The administrative history of the area is complex. In 1888, the Local Government Act created several county boroughs. Newcastle, Gateshead, and Sunderland became independent local governments. Tynemouth joined them as a county borough in 1904. In 1974, the modern metropolitan county was officially created. It was formed from parts of south-east Northumberland and north-east County Durham. Before this, the name "Tyneside" was proposed. However, the name was controversial on Wearside. The government changed it to "Tyne and Wear" at the request of Sunderland.

Tyne and Wear has a long history of significant people and structures. In the late 600s, the monk St. Bede lived in a local monastery. He wrote important histories of the Early Middle Ages. About 150 years ago, Souter Lighthouse was built in South Shields. This was the first electric structure of its kind. The area is also famous for its industrial and commercial history. Many large companies operate here today. For example, the Nissan motor factory is the largest in the UK.

Other notable businesses include the Greggs bakery and the Sage Group.

The county connects to many broader economic and social systems. Its diverse economy includes manufacturing, technology, and services. It hosts several higher education institutions. These include Newcastle University and Sunderland University. The area also has a distinct political identity. It is divided into 12 parliamentary constituencies. Historically, the region has been a Labour stronghold. South Shields is unique because it has never returned a Conservative MP since 1832. This mix of history, industry, and government makes Tyne and Wear a vital part of England.
