Turlough O'Carolan was a famous blind Celtic harper and composer from Ireland. He lived from 1670 until 1738. Many people call him Ireland's national composer because his music was so special. He was a master of the harp, which is a stringed instrument. He also wrote beautiful songs and sang them. His music was a mix of different styles. Some of his tunes used an old style called "Gaelic Harping." Other pieces showed the influence of classical music from the rest of Europe.

Carolan's life was full of travel and music. He was born in Nobber, County Meath. His father worked as a blacksmith. When Turlough was eighteen, he lost his sight to smallpox. A kind woman named Mrs. MacDermott Roe helped him. She gave him an education and helped him learn the harp. At age twenty-one, he started a big journey. He used a horse and a guide to travel all over Ireland. He visited wealthy people called patrons to play music for them.

Making music was how Carolan connected with the world. He often wrote a tune first while riding his horse. Later, he would add words to the music. He used a special word called a "planxty." This was a song made to honor a happy host. Because he was such a good musician, patrons welcomed him into their homes. It is said that people even waited to have weddings or funerals until he could arrive to play. He married Mary Maguire in 1720 and they had seven children.

We know a lot about his music thanks to many records. Most of his music was not written down while he was alive. It was kept alive by people playing fiddles and pipes. In 1792, a man named Edward Bunting began collecting these pieces. Today, we know of 214 tunes identified by Donal O'Sullivan. Some of his most famous songs include "Blind Mary" and "Sheebeg and Sheemore." Musicians still record these songs on albums today. Groups like The Chieftains have performed his wonderful music.
