When Turlough was eighteen, he lost his sight to smallpox. This is a sickness that can cause blindness. After this, he learned to play the harp very well. At age twenty-one, he began to travel across Ireland. He rode a horse to visit different people. He wrote music for these patrons, who were people who supported him.

Turlough made many kinds of music. He wrote songs with Irish words. He also wrote tunes just for the harp. He used a special word, "planxty," for songs that honored a happy host. Some of his music sounds like old Irish styles. Other songs show styles from other parts of Europe.

Many people still play his music today. Musicians play his tunes on harps, fiddles, and guitars. Some songs are very famous, like "Blind Mary" and "Sheebeg and Sheemore." People even hold a festival each year to remember his work.
