Learning to play music was a lifelong journey for Tárrega. As a child, he listened to his father play many music styles. He even practiced on his father's guitar while his father worked. Later, he studied with music teachers who were blind. In 1874, he entered the Madrid Royal Conservatory to study composition. There, a teacher named Emilio Arrieta helped him focus on the guitar. He also learned to play the piano very well. This helped him write new music for the guitar by using piano ideas.

His life was full of many travels and big changes. He was born in Villarreal, Spain, on November 21, 1852. As a young boy, he faced a hard time when he injured his eyes. His family moved to Castellón de la Plana so he could attend music classes. Tárrega traveled to places like Barcelona, Valencia, and Madrid. He even went on tours to France, Italy, and London. In 1882, he married a woman named María José Rizo. They eventually settled in Barcelona, where he lived for many years.

Many of Tárrega's songs are still loved by people all over the world. He wrote about eighty original pieces and many other musical arrangements. One famous piece is called "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," which he wrote after visiting Granada. Another piece, "Lágrima," means teardrop and was inspired by a sad moment in London. He also wrote "Danza Mora" after hearing rhythms on a drum in Algiers. His piece "Gran Vals" became very famous as the Nokia phone ringtone.

Tárrega used special instruments to make his beautiful music. A famous guitar maker named Antonio de Torres gave him a guitar in 1869. This instrument had a superior sound that inspired his playing. Tárrega also used a guitar made by Ribot y Alcañiz. He even changed how guitarists use their hands by cutting his fingernails a certain way. Today, people still celebrate his talent through the Francisco Tárrega International Guitar Competition. This contest happens every year in Benicàssim, Spain, to help new musicians. His style lives on through the many students he taught.
