He was a famous Spanish composer from the late Classical and early Romantic eras. People often called him the "Beethoven of the guitar" because of his great skill. Sor did not just play the guitar for fun. He wrote music for many different things. He composed operas, symphonies, and songs. He also wrote music for ballets, which are stories told through dance. His ballet named Cinderella was very popular and had over one hundred performances.

He wanted to share his love of music with everyone.

Sor had a very specific way of playing his instrument. He did not use the large guitars we see today. Instead, he played smaller and slimmer guitars called "Romantic" guitars. These instruments were often made by famous makers like Pierre René Lacôte. When he played, he used his fingers in a special way. He rarely used his ring finger for melody. He also chose not to use nails on that hand. These small details helped create the unique sound of his music.

His life began in Barcelona, Spain, in 1778. His family wanted him to be a soldier like his ancestors. His father introduced him to the guitar and Italian opera. This changed everything for the young boy. He loved music so much that he left his military plans behind. He even wrote songs in Latin to impress his parents. Later, he studied at a choir school in a famous monastery.

This place gave him many happy memories from his childhood.

Sor lived a life of travel and change. He moved to Paris to try his music career. When that was difficult, he moved to London in 1815. In London, he taught lessons and wrote successful ballet music. He even traveled to Moscow with his wife, a famous dancer. He lived in many different cities across Europe. During his later years, he returned to Paris to retire. He spent much of this time writing his most famous guitar pieces.

One of the most important things Sor did was help others learn. He wrote many pieces of "didactic" music, which means music meant for teaching. He created lessons for players at every skill level. These include his Twelve Studies and his Progressive Lessons. Some of his works, like Op. 45, were even made for people with little patience. His book, the Méthode pour la Guitare, was published in 1830. Even two hundred years later, musicians still play his beautiful music today.
