Michael Flatley is a famous performer who changed the way people see Irish dance. Before his shows, dancers usually kept their upper bodies very still while they moved. Flatley changed this by adding new rhythms and movements for the arms and torso.

He helped create the massive show Riverdance in 1994. This show started as a short act for a contest in Ireland. It became so popular that it turned into a full production. Flatley later left to create his own shows like Lord of the Dance. His performances have been seen by more than 60 million people in 60 different countries.

Creating these shows required a lot of skill and hard work. Flatley did not just dance; he was also a choreographer who designed the moves. He created shows like Feet of Flames, which was a special performance in London. In that show, over 100 dancers performed on a huge, four-level moving stage.

He even used a flute to play music during his shows. His shows were so successful that they earned more than $1 billion. He worked with many people, including composer Ronan Hardiman. These big productions could play in large arenas and stadiums for huge crowds.

Flatley's journey began long before he was a global star. He was born on July 16, 1958, to Irish parents in the United States. His mother, Eilish, was a gifted dancer herself. Michael began taking dance lessons when he was eleven years old. In 1975, at age 17, he became the first American to win a World Irish Dance title.

He was also a talented athlete in other ways. In the 1970s, he competed in boxing and won a championship in Chicago. He even held a Guinness World Record for tapping his feet 35 times per second. This shows how much he practiced his footwork.

Life as a top performer can be very hard on the body. Flatley retired from professional dancing in 2016 because of many injuries. He dealt with constant pain in his spine, knees, feet, and ribs.

Even though he stopped dancing, he stayed very busy with other creative jobs. He became a writer, a director, and a producer of films. He wrote and starred in a spy movie called Blackbird. He also started a company called Castlehyde. His many different jobs show how much he loves to create new things.

Today, we can see how Flatley's talents connect to many different arts. He uses his dance moves to make paintings by dancing on canvas with paint. This unique way of making art has even earned him high prices at auctions.
