Michael Flatley is a world-renowned performer and choreographer who revolutionized the art of Irish dance. Before his influence, traditional Irish dance was characterized by a very still upper body. Flatley changed this by introducing new rhythms, syncopation, and upper body movements. This evolution helped transform a traditional folk dance into a massive global spectacle.

His career reached a turning point during the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest in Ireland. He was invited to perform a seven-minute intermission show titled "Riverdance." This performance received worldwide acclaim and led to a full-length production. Flatley served as a lead performer and provided principal choreography alongside Jean Butler. However, after the show's successful debut in 1995, Flatley left to seek more creative control. This departure led to a dispute over salaries and royalties, eventually resulting in a £1 million settlement regarding a wrongful termination lawsuit.

Following his split from Riverdance, Flatley created several massive productions. His show "Lord of the Dance" premiered in June 1996 at the Point Theatre in Dublin. Unlike traditional theater shows, these productions were designed to play in large arenas and stadiums. He also created "Feet of Flames," a specialized version of his work. One famous performance took place in Hyde Park, London, on a massive four-tier hydraulic stage. During the finale of that show, over 100 dancers performed across all four levels of the structure.

Flatley's personal history is rooted in both Irish heritage and American life. He was born on July 16, 1958, to Irish immigrants in the United States. His mother, Eilish, was a gifted step dancer from County Carlow. Michael began formal dance lessons at age eleven in Chicago. In 1975, at age 17, he made history as the first American to win a World Irish Dance title at the Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne.

Beyond dance, Flatley demonstrated incredible physical skill in other disciplines. In the 1970s, he competed in the Chicago Golden Gloves boxing tournament. He rose through the ranks to win the middleweight division, recording five knock-out victories. He also held a Guinness World Record for tap dancing 35 times per second. The scale of his professional success is immense. His shows have been seen by more than 60 million people in 60 different countries. These performances have grossed more than $1 billion globally.

Years of intense physical performance eventually took a heavy toll on his body. Flatley retired from professional dance in 2016 due to severe, chronic injuries. His medical issues included damage to his vertebral column and a damaged left knee. He also suffered from a torn right calf muscle, two ruptured Achilles tendons, and a fractured rib. In early 2023, he was treated for an aggressive cancer, which has since gone into remission.

Even after retiring from the stage, Flatley has expanded into many other creative fields. He is a filmmaker who wrote, directed, and starred in the spy thriller "Blackbird." He also became a visual artist using a unique method. He creates paintings by dancing upon canvases that have been splattered with paint. These works, including a series based on the Great Irish Famine, have reached high auction prices. He also ventured into the food and beverage industry by founding a company called Castlehyde.
