Many people also speak it in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Some Turkmen communities live far away in Russia and Turkey. This language helps millions of people share their history and culture.

Learning how Turkmen works is like playing with building blocks. It is an agglutinative language. This means you build words by adding suffixes to the end. You can add many parts to one word to change its meaning. For example, you can take the word for "village" and add parts to say "from the villages." Turkmen also uses something called vowel harmony. This makes the sounds in a word flow together nicely. Most suffixes have different forms to match the vowels in the word. The language also has no grammatical gender. The word order usually follows a subject, object, and then verb pattern.

Writing Turkmen has a very long and changing history.

For a long time, people used the Arabic script to write it. This writing style was used for many centuries. In the early 1900s, the first Turkmen primer and newspaper appeared. Later, the alphabet changed several times during the Soviet era. In 1928, a Latin alphabet was used for a short time. By 1940, the writing system switched to Cyrillic. Finally, in 1993, Turkmenistan approved a new Latin alphabet. Today, people in Iran and Afghanistan still use the Arabic script.

Turkmen has many different dialects used by different groups. The standard form used in Turkmenistan is based on the Teke dialect. In Iran, many people use the Yomud dialect. People in Afghanistan often use the Ersary variety. There are other dialects too, like the Salyr and Saryk varieties. Turkmen is also very special because it kept old sounds. It kept unique vowel lengths from the early Oghuz Turks. It also has special dental fricative sounds. These sounds are rare in other Turkic languages. Only one other language, Bashkir, has similar sounds.

This language connects people to a very old way of life. The Turkmen are descendants of the Oghuz Turks. They share a long history with people in Turkey and Azerbaijan. They also share famous stories like the Book of Dede Korkut. These stories and poems are part of a rich literary tradition. Even though the writing has changed, the heart of the language remains. It links modern people to the ancient poets of the past. Speaking Turkmen is a way to honor this long journey through time.
