Turkish literature has a very long history. It spans nearly 1,300 years. For a long time, there were two different ways to share stories.

One way was folk literature. This was an oral tradition. This means people told stories out loud. They also sang them as songs. These songs were part of daily life. People sang at feasts or even at funerals. Minstrels called aşık performed these songs.

The second way was written literature. This was often very fancy. It used the Ottoman Turkish language. This style was called Divan literature. It used many words from Arabic and Persian. These two ways stayed separate for many years. They did not mix much. Then, in 1923, the Republic of Turkey was founded. This brought the two traditions together for the first time. People also share stories through epics. An epic is a long story about heroes. One famous example is the Book of Dede Korkut. Another is the Epic of Manas. These stories help people remember their past. They show the pride and skill of their people.
