Trowel

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A trowel is a specialized hand tool used for several specific tasks. It is designed to dig, move, apply, or smooth small amounts of material. These materials are often viscous, which means they are thick and sticky. They can also be particulate, meaning they are made of tiny grains like sand or soil.

Trowels are essential in many different fields. They are used in construction, gardening, archaeology, and even camping. Because every job requires a different movement, many different shapes of trowels exist.

In masonry and construction, trowels work by manipulating wet or semi-solid substances. A bricklayer's trowel features an elongated, triangular metal blade. Masons use this shape to level, spread, and shape materials like cement, plaster, or mortar.

For smaller tasks or repairs, workers use a pointing trowel. This is essentially a scaled-down version of the larger bricklayer's tool. To fill the gaps between bricks, a worker might use a tuck pointing trowel. This tool is designed to be long and thin so it can pack mortar into tight spaces.

Other construction trowels focus on the surface of a material. A float trowel, or finishing trowel, is usually rectangular in shape. It is used to smooth, level, or add texture to the top layer of hardening concrete.

If a worker needs to reach corners, they might use a flooring trowel. This tool has one rectangular end and one pointed end to fit into tight angles. For applying adhesive to tiles or synthetic flooring, a notched trowel is used. This tool has regularly spaced notches along its edges to help spread the glue evenly.

The materials used to make trowels affect how long they last. Traditionally, masonry trowels are made of forged carbon steel. However, many newer versions are manufactured from cast stainless steel. Stainless steel is a popular choice because it is rust-free. It also provides longer wear during heavy use. In the United States, the Marshalltown brand is a preferred choice for pointing trowels. In the British Isles, the WHS 4" pointing trowel is considered the traditional tool.

Outside of construction, trowels serve very different purposes in nature. A garden trowel has a pointed, scoop-shaped metal blade. It is much smaller than a spade or a shovel, allowing it to be used with only one hand.

People use them to break up earth, dig small holes for planting, or mix in fertilizer. Camping trowels are also designed for one-handed use in the outdoors. These tools can be used to stake a tent or level a sleeping surface. Some camping trowels are even made of lighter materials to fit easily into a backpack. Others are heavy enough to chop kindling or shovel soil without bending over.

Specialized camping trowels may include extra features for survival. Some have a serrated side edge to cut through frozen soil or tree roots. They might also include a secondary side ruler to measure the depth of the ground. To keep users safe, some serrated models include a cover guard. This prevents the sharp edges from cutting the user or tearing a backpack. Some designs even allow a person to store toilet paper inside or upon the handle.

In the field of archaeology, trowels are used as precision instruments. Archaeologists typically use 4" or 5" steel pointing trowels during excavations. They use these tools to scratch the strata, which are the different layers of soil. By scratching the surface, they can make the colors of the soil clear. This allows the scientist to identify, process, and excavate specific layers of history. This careful work helps researchers understand the different periods represented in the ground.

Finally, it is helpful to see how trowels relate to larger machines and other tools. While a hand trowel is small, a power trowel is a much larger device. It is a walk-behind machine powered by gasoline or electricity. It uses rotating paddles to finish large concrete floors. Trowels also share similarities with other blades. A taping knife is used for spreading joint compound in drywall. A putty knife is a smaller tool used for many different applications. Even artists use a palette knife, which is a small tool similar to a trowel, for oil painting.
