Farmers and scientists study many plant groups. They look at arboriculture, which is the study of trees. They also study floriculture to grow flowers. Some people grow vegetables, which is called olericulture. Others study fruits, which is called pomology. They even study grapes through viticulture. This way, they can grow many things to eat.

Many plants grow naturally in these warm lands. These plants are called indigenous plants. You might find oil palm or okra there. Rice and sugarcane are also important crops. Tasty fruits like pineapple and banana grow here too. Papaya and mango are other examples. These plants are native to the tropical heat.

Other plants come from cooler, temperate zones. Scientists try to help these plants adapt. They use breeding to help them live in the heat. The tropics cover 36 percent of Earth's surface. They also cover 20 percent of all land. This means there is huge potential for growing things.

Weather in the tropics works in special ways. It is not about changing temperatures. Instead, it is about how much it rains. Most places have wet and dry seasons. Near the equator, these seasons are less different. High hills can also be much cooler. These highland areas help plants like tomatoes grow. Lowlands are often too hot for them.
