Parrots are a rare group that use three limbs. When they climb, they use their heads as a third limb. This head helps them push and move up walls. It works as well as the arms of primates.

Some animals move with three legs for other reasons. A dog or cat might lose a leg. This is called amputation. Moving this way can cause health issues. It can lead to spinal deformity or osteoarthritis. This is a type of joint pain. Some animals are born with three legs due to mutations. In humans, a third limb might come from surgery. This happens when twins are joined at birth. These extra limbs often have limited movement. A man named Frank Lentini could kick a football. But he lacked fine motor skills in that limb. Fine motor skills are small, precise movements.
