Tripedalism

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Tripedalism is a way of moving using three limbs. Most animals use two legs or four legs to travel. This is called bipedalism or quadrupedalism.

Tripedalism is quite rare in the natural world. It is hard to find animals that use three limbs naturally. Most life forms have symmetry with two sides. This symmetry appeared very early in the history of life. Even before legs or fins evolved, this pattern was set.

Parrots are a special group that uses three limbs. They belong to the order called Psittaciformes. These birds use their heads to climb. The head acts like a third limb. It helps them move up vertical surfaces. This head use provides great force. It works as well as the arms of primates.

Some primates also show tripedal movement. They do this by using one limb to grasp an object. This helps them move in different ways.

Scientists have studied these unique ways of moving. Tracy J. Thomson wrote about this in 2019. Her work appeared in the journal BioEssays. Other researchers looked at parrots in 2022. Melody W. Young and her team published their findings. They studied how the parrot head helps them climb. Their work appeared in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

These studies help us understand limb numbers.

Some animals become tripeds because of injury. A dog or cat might lose a leg. This loss is called an amputation. Moving on three legs can cause health problems. It can lead to osteoarthritis, which is joint pain. It can also cause spinal deformity. This happens because it breaks natural movement cycles.

Mutations can also cause three legs to grow. This happens in some animals and humans.

In humans, a third limb can come from surgery. This happens when conjoined twins are separated. These limbs often have very limited movement. One man named Frank Lentini was a famous case. He had a third limb that could move. He could even kick a football. However, he lacked fine motor skills. This means he could not make small, precise movements.
