Trigonometry is a special branch of mathematics. It studies how the angles and side lengths of triangles relate to each other.

This math works best with right triangles, which have one square corner. In these triangles, the sides have specific names based on their position. The longest side is called the hypotenuse. The side across from an angle is the opposite side. The side next to the angle is the adjacent side.

By knowing these names, we can use math to find missing measurements.

We use three main rules called trigonometric functions. The sine function compares the opposite side to the hypotenuse. The cosine function compares the adjacent side to the hypotenuse. The tangent function compares the opposite side to the adjacent side.

There are also three other rules called cosecant, secant, and cotangent. These are known as reciprocals, which means they are built from the first three. These functions help us solve equations or simplify math expressions. They allow us to find any side or angle if we have enough information.

People have been exploring these ideas for thousands of years. Sumerian and Babylonian astronomers studied the ratios of sides in similar triangles. In the 3rd century BC, Greek mathematicians like Euclid and Archimedes studied chords in circles.

Hipparchus is often called the "father of trigonometry" because he made the first tables of chords. In the 2nd century AD, Ptolemy from Egypt made even more detailed tables. These tables were used for astronomy for 1,200 years. Later, Indian mathematicians like Aryabhata documented the properties of sine in the 5th century.

As time passed, more experts added to this knowledge. In 830 AD, the Persian mathematician Habash al-Hasib al-Marwazi made the first table of cotangents. By the 10th century, Abū al-Wafā' al-Būzjānī used all six functions. He even made tables accurate to eight decimal places. The Persian scholar Nasir al-Din al-Tusi helped make trigonometry its own math subject. He worked on spherical trigonometry, which deals with shapes on a sphere.

These discoveries eventually reached Europe through translations of Greek and Arabic works.

Today, trigonometry is used in many important ways. It is essential for surveying land and making accurate maps.

Sailors use it for navigation to find their way across the ocean. It is also used in celestial mechanics to study the movement of stars. Even modern computers use built-in instructions to calculate these functions quickly. We can also see these patterns in waves using graphs.
