The plot begins at the Admiral Benbow Inn near Bristol, England. An old sailor named Billy Bones stays there and keeps a mysterious chart. After Bones dies from a stroke, Jim Hawkins finds a map in a sea chest. This map shows where the pirate Captain Flint hid his gold. Jim, along with Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney, decides to find the treasure. They charter a schooner called the Hispaniola to sail to the island.

The journey involves several dangerous stages and conflicts. Once at sea, Jim overhears a secret plan by the ship's cook, Long John Silver. Silver is a charismatic one-legged man who is secretly leading a mutiny. A mutiny is when a crew tries to take control of a ship by force. After reaching the island, the loyal crew takes refuge in a stockade. Jim eventually meets Ben Gunn, a man who was marooned on the island three years earlier.

Stevenson developed the story during the summer of 1881 in Braemar, Scotland. Bad weather kept his family indoors, which gave him time to write. He originally wrote the tale to entertain his 12-year-old stepson, Lloyd Osbourne. The story was first shared in weekly installments in a magazine called Young Folks. These parts ran from 1 October 1881 to 28 January 1882. The complete book was finally published by Cassell & Co. on 14 November 1883.

The novel is significant for creating many famous pirate tropes. It helped popularize the idea of treasure maps marked with a large "X." It also gave us the image of one-legged seamen with parrots on their shoulders. These specific details have become standard in many pirate stories today. The book was a major financial and critical success for Stevenson. It transformed him from an unknown writer into a celebrated novelist.

The characters in the book are complex and multi-layered. Jim Hawkins is the narrator who shows increasing wisdom and courage. Long John Silver is a deceitful leader, yet he shows a strange kindness toward Jim. Dr. Livesey is a rational physician who treats even wounded pirates fairly. Captain Smollett is a professional leader who values rules and discipline. Even Ben Gunn is a unique figure, described as having a craving for cheese.

Treasure Island fits into a long tradition of desert island literature. This genre grew from Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719. Other authors like Sir Walter Scott and Edgar Allan Poe also influenced the genre. Stevenson even borrowed specific ideas from these earlier writers. He used the idea of a pointing skeleton from Poe's "The Gold-Bug." He also drew inspiration from Washington Irving's writings. This shows how great stories often build upon the work of those before them.
