The story starts at the Admiral Benbow Inn near Bristol. An old sailor named Billy Bones stays there and tells wild sea stories. He warns a boy named Jim Hawkins to watch for a one-legged man. After Bones dies, Jim finds a secret map in a sea chest. This map shows where the pirate Captain Flint hid his treasure. Jim joins a trip on a ship called the Hispaniola to find the gold.

Robert Louis Stevenson wrote this book in the summer of 1881. He was staying in Braemar, Scotland, during bad weather. He wanted to make a fun story for his 12-year-old stepson, Lloyd Osbourne. The book was first shared in a magazine called Young Folks. It appeared in seventeen weekly parts between 1881 and 1882. The book was finally published as a full novel on 14 November 1883.

Many specific details make the story feel real. Jim Hawkins is the brave narrator who grows wiser on his trip. He meets the cook, Long John Silver, who is a one-legged leader of a mutiny. A mutiny is when a crew tries to take over a ship. There is also Ben Gunn, a man left on the island who loves cheese. The crew travels from Bristol to a tropical island to find the cache.

This book changed how we think about pirates today. It helped create the idea of a treasure map with a big "X." It also gave us images of one-legged sailors with parrots on their shoulders. Many other stories about desert islands were written before it. These included books like Robinson Crusoe from 1719. Stevenson's work brought all these ideas together into one amazing tale.
