Transnistria is a small strip of land located between the Dniester river and the border of Ukraine.

Most of the world sees it as part of the country of Moldova. However, it acts like its own separate country. This place is often called a "frozen conflict" zone.

This means that while there is no active war, the political situation is not fully settled. It has its own government, parliament, and military. It even uses its own special money and vehicle license plates.

Life in Transnistria works much like a normal country. The capital city is Tiraspol, which is also the largest city in the region.

The people there have their own postal system and police force. They also use their own flag and national anthem.

Because the status of the land is unclear, many people hold more than one citizenship. Most people have Transnistrian citizenship, but they often also hold passports from Moldova, Russia, Romania, or Ukraine.

The history of this land began many years ago. In 1924, a group called the Moldavian ASSR was formed within the Soviet Union.

Later, during World War II, the area was controlled by different groups. Between 1941 and 1944, Romania controlled a large area known as the Transnistria Governorate.

During this time, many people suffered greatly in ghettos and camps. After the war ended, the Soviet Union took control of the region again. In 1940, the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic was created by combining different lands.

Modern changes started in the late 1980s as the Soviet Union began to change.

In Moldova, new groups wanted to use the Latin alphabet and the Moldovan language. This made some people in the Transnistria area feel worried about their own culture. They wanted to keep using the Russian language. In 1990, leaders in the region declared they wanted to be a separate republic. This led to a military conflict in March 1992. The fighting ended with a ceasefire in July of that same year.

Today, the region is managed by a special peace agreement.

A group made of people from Moldova, Russia, and Transnistria works together to keep the peace. This group is called the Joint Control Commission. They help make sure the ceasefire is followed. While the land is officially part of Moldova, it remains a very unique place. It connects the history of the Soviet Union to the modern world.
