He was a pro-Russian leader who held many important jobs. He served as both the head of state and the prime minister. His rise to power happened during a time of great change in the area. Many people saw him as a central figure in the local conflict.

Before he entered politics, Zakharchenko had a very different life. He graduated from a technical college to start his career. He worked as an electrician in the mining industry. Later, he opened his own business related to mining. He also studied at a law institute for the Interior Ministry. In December 2013, he became the head of the Donetsk branch of OPLOT. This was a pro-Russian group started by Yevgeny Zhilin in Kharkiv.

Zakharchenko's political career grew quickly during the unrest in 2014. In April 2014, he and others occupied the Donetsk City Council offices. They wanted a vote on the status of their region. By May 2014, he played a leading role in the fight against the Ukrainian government. On August 7, 2014, he became the prime minister of the DPR. He took over this role from Alexander Borodai. Some people claimed that Russia helped place him in this position. He later won the prime ministership with 78.93% of the vote in late 2014.

He was involved in many important peace talks and battles. In September 2014, he was a lead negotiator for the Minsk Protocol. This was a plan meant to bring peace to the Donbas region. In February 2015, he agreed to the Minsk II peace treaty. However, fighting continued in places like the Battle of Debaltseve. Zakharchenko was even wounded in the leg during that battle in February 2015. He often spoke about his goals for the people in Donetsk. He wanted higher pensions and a strong state for them.

His life ended suddenly in the summer of 2018. On August 31, 2018, a bomb exploded at a cafe. The cafe was named Separ and was on Pushkin Boulevard in Donetsk.

This explosion killed Zakharchenko and wounded a finance minister. The DPR and Russia blamed the Ukrainian government for the blast. Ukraine said the death was caused by fighting within the DPR. His death led to a period of mourning in the region. A memorial service was held at the Donetsk Opera and Ballet Theatre.
