It is known as an autonomous territorial unit. This means the local Gagauz people have the power to manage their own affairs. The region is not one single piece of land. Instead, it is made of four separate parts called enclaves.

The largest enclave sits in the center and contains the cities of Comrat and Ceadîr-Lunga. A second large area is located around the city of Vulcănești. Two much smaller enclaves include the villages of Copceac and Carbalia.

The Gagauz people are a Turkic ethnic group. They are also members of the Orthodox Christian faith. There are many theories about where their ancestors came from. Some historians think they descend from the Bulgars. Other ideas suggest they come from the Cumans or Seljuk Turks.

A plaque in a local museum mentions the Bulgar theory. The Gagauz people have lived in this region for a long time. They have their own unique language and culture.

The history of this land has seen many different rulers. In 1812, the Russian Empire took control of the area known as Bessarabia. Later, the Kingdom of Romania ruled the land. The Soviet Union also occupied the territory for many years.

Between 1990 and 1995, there were big changes in how the land was governed. The Gagauz people declared themselves independent in 1990. However, they eventually rejoined Moldova in 1995 through a peaceful agreement. This important event is now celebrated as a holiday on December 23.

Today, Gagauzia has its own way of making rules. The local government is called the People's Assembly. This group makes laws about schools, culture, and local money.

The highest leader is called the Governor. People elect the Governor every four years through a vote. To be a Governor, a person must be at least 35 years old. They must also be able to speak the Gagauz language fluently. This helps them lead the community effectively.

Life in Gagauzia involves many different languages. People often speak Gagauz, Romanian, and Russian. The region stays connected to the rest of Moldova through laws and shared history.

The local government can also talk to the central government in Chișinău. If Moldova ever decides to join Romania, Gagauzia has a special right. They can decide their own future through a process called self-determination. This ensures the Gagauz people have a voice in what happens to their home.
