Transnistria is a landlocked territory located between the Dniester River and the border of Ukraine.

While most of the international community recognizes it as part of the Republic of Moldova, it functions as a breakaway state. Locally, it is known as Pridnestrovie, or the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR). This region is often described as a "frozen conflict" zone.

This term refers to a situation where active fighting has stopped, but the political status remains unresolved. The territory controls a narrow strip of land along the river's left bank. Its capital and largest urban center is the city of Tiraspol.

As a de facto independent semi-presidential republic, Transnistria maintains its own internal systems. It has established its own government, parliament, and military forces. The region also operates its own police, postal system, and currency.

Because its international status is unrecognised, many residents hold multiple citizenships. While they possess Transnistrian citizenship, many also hold passports from Moldova, Russia, Romania, or Ukraine.

The population is composed of several main ethnic groups, including Russians, Moldovans, and Ukrainians.

The political roots of the region trace back to the early Soviet era. In 1924, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (MASSR) was formed within the Ukrainian SSR.

This entity included much of today's Transnistria. During World War II, the administrative landscape changed significantly. In 1940, the Soviet Union created the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. This was done by combining parts of the annexed territory of Bessarabia with the former MASSR. Between 1941 and 1944, the region was under the control of the Transnistria Governorate, administered by Romania. During this occupation, the administration implemented a process called Romanianisation. This period was marked by great hardship, as many Jewish and Roma people were deported to ghettos and concentration camps.

Modern tensions began to rise during the late 1980s. As the Soviet Union underwent reforms under Mikhail Gorbachev, political liberalization occurred. In Moldova, the Popular Front of Moldova (PFM) gained influence. This movement advocated for Moldovan to be the sole state language and for the use of the Latin alphabet. These cultural shifts caused significant anxiety among ethnic minorities. Many Slavic populations, specifically Russians and Ukrainians, feared the loss of Russian as a common language. They also worried about potential unification between Moldova and Romania. In response, the Yedinstvo (Unity) Movement was formed to protect the status of the Russian language.

Political separation became official in 1990. Following a referendum, the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic was proclaimed on September 2, 1990. Although Soviet President Gorbachev declared the proclamation lacked a legal basis, the local authorities maintained control. When the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, the region declared full independence. This led to a military conflict between Transnistrian separatists and Moldovan forces in March 1992. The fighting was intense but limited in scale. The war eventually concluded with a ceasefire in July 1992.

Today, the region is managed through a specific peacekeeping structure. A three-party Joint Control Commission was created to oversee the ceasefire. This commission includes representatives from Moldova, Russia, and Transnistria. It is supported by a trilateral peacekeeping force.

While this arrangement has prevented further large-scale fighting, the legal status of the land is still a subject of international debate. In March 2022, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe defined the territory as being under Russian military occupation. This highlights the ongoing complexity of the region's relationship with its neighbors.

Transnistria exists within a unique geopolitical framework. It is one of several post-Soviet "frozen conflict" zones, alongside Abkhazia and South Ossetia. These territories maintain friendly relations and have formed the Community for Democracy and Rights of Nations. The region's economy and movement are also shaped by international agreements. For example, since 2005, a deal between Moldova and Ukraine requires Transnistrian companies to register with Moldovan authorities to export goods through the Ukrainian border. This was implemented following the work of the European Union Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM). These connections show how a small, unrecognised state remains deeply tied to global political and economic systems.
