The name Tiraspol comes from two ancient Greek words. The first is Tyras, the ancient name for the Dniester River. The second is polis, which means city. This name reflects the deep history of the area. The site has been inhabited by different ethnic groups for thousands of years. This long timeline connects the modern city to the ancient world.

Ancient history in this region began around 600 BC. A Greek colony named Tyras was founded by people from Miletus. This colony sat near the mouth of the Tiras River. During the second century BC, indigenous kings ruled the area. They even issued their own coins. The Romans later restored the city in 56 AD. They made it part of the province of Lower Moesia. Coins from this time show the heads of Roman emperors like Domitian. However, the Goths eventually invaded and destroyed the city.

The modern city of Tiraspol was founded in 1792. The Russian Field Marshal Alexander Suvorov established the city. He built fortifications to protect the western border. The city was officially granted city rights in 1795. A famous statue of Suvorov remains a major landmark today. In 1828, the Russian government set up a customs house. This office used 14 employees to inspect shipments. They checked goods like sugar, wine, oil, and paper to stop smuggling.

Tiraspol has experienced many periods of political change and hardship. In 1924, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was created in Ukraine. Tiraspol became its capital in 1929. During World War II, Romanian troops occupied the city in 1941. This was a very dark time for the local Jewish population. Almost all of them died during the occupation. The Red Army retook the city in 1944. Later, during the Great Purge in 1937 and 1938, many people were executed in Tiraspol. In 1990, citizens held a referendum to declare independence. This led to the formation of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.

The city's population has changed significantly over the decades. In 1989, the population was about 190,000 people. By 1992, it reached about 203,000. However, political shifts and emigration caused the numbers to drop. The 2004 census recorded 158,069 inhabitants. The city is home to many different ethnic groups. Russians make up about 41.71% of the population. Ukrainians account for 33.07%. Moldovans make up 15.05%. Other groups include Bulgarians, Gagauz, and Belarusians.
