Traffic congestion happens when too many vehicles want to use a road at once.

This causes slower speeds and longer trip times for everyone. When vehicles stop moving for a long time, it is called a traffic jam.

Some drivers may even feel very angry during these delays. This is known as road rage. Scientists can actually model traffic like a fluid moving through a pipe. As the demand for road space gets close to what the road can hold, extreme congestion sets in.

There are many ways that congestion begins. About half of all traffic congestion in the United States is recurring because of high volume. The rest comes from things like crashes, road work, or bad weather.

Even rainfall can reduce how fast cars can safely drive. Sometimes, a single car braking heavily can cause a ripple effect. These are called traffic waves that spread out through the stream. MIT mathematicians found that small disturbances can grow into self-sustaining jams. They call these tiny, sudden jams "jamitons."

People have tried different ways to solve this problem for a long time. In 1962, an economist named Anthony Downs wrote about how peak-hour congestion is almost inevitable. He noted that most people have a standard workday. This means many people try to use the roads at the same time.

Many planners suggest adding more lanes to help the flow. However, this often leads to something called induced demand. This means that more people start driving because the road is wider. This new traffic can quickly fill up the extra space.

Cities use many different tools to manage how roads are used.

Some roads use HOV lanes for cars with several passengers. Other places use bus lanes to help public transport move faster. Some highways even use reversible lanes that change direction at different times.

In New York City, officials implemented congestion pricing in January 2025. This is a way to manage how many cars enter busy areas. These tools help balance the number of vehicles with the space available.

Understanding traffic helps us see how our world is connected.

It shows how our daily schedules affect the movement of the whole city. We can see how one small action, like braking, affects many others. It also helps us think about how to build better cities. By using math and science, we can find better ways to travel. Whether by bus, car, or bike, we all share the same paths.
