It includes many different types of travelers. Some are heavy motor vehicles like cars and trucks. Others are smaller, such as mopeds or bicycles. People walking are also part of traffic.

Keeping these different groups moving together requires careful organization. This helps everyone travel in a safe and efficient way.

To keep things orderly, we use rules of the road. One main idea is the right of way. This tells people who has the priority to use a part of the road first.

Drivers use signals to show their plans. For example, blinkers announce when a driver intends to turn.

At busy intersections, traffic signals give each road a set amount of time to move. This prevents everyone from trying to go at once. Without these rules, traffic could become a disorganized mess.

Rules for traffic have changed over a long time. The word traffic originally meant "trade." It comes from old Italian and French words.

Today, we have formal international rules. The 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic is an important treaty under the United Nations. It helps set basic rules for many countries. However, some places still use local rules or common sense. Even in the United Kingdom, the Highway Code offers both rules and advice.

Different places have very different laws. In the United States, each state and city makes its own traffic codes.

In Florida, most traffic mistakes are just minor offenses. But in South Carolina, some mistakes are treated as crimes. In San Francisco, some turns are not allowed at all.

Drivers there might have to make three right turns to go left. This is sometimes called a "San Francisco left turn." These specific rules help manage the unique needs of each city.

Sometimes, traffic does not move smoothly. This can lead to congestion or even gridlock.

A small problem like a crash or road work can slow things down. On busy freeways, this can create traffic waves. These are ripples of slow movement that travel through the cars. Scientists even use math to study how this happens. They use things like queuing theory to understand how traffic flows.
