Traffic congestion happens when too many vehicles use a road.

This makes cars move slower. It also makes trips take much longer. When cars stop for a long time, we call it a traffic jam.

Many things can cause these jams. About half of jams in the U.S. happen because there are just too many cars. Other jams come from crashes, road work, or bad weather. Even rain can slow cars down. Sometimes, a single driver hitting the brakes can start a chain reaction. This creates waves of slowing traffic that spread out. Scientists call these tiny, sudden jams "jamitons."

Some people try to fix traffic by adding more lanes. However, this often does not work. Adding lanes can lead to induced demand. This means more people decide to drive because the road looks bigger. This new traffic can fill the space quickly. Other ideas include using bus lanes or toll lanes to manage how many cars use the road.
