technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A toll road is a special path for traveling. Some people call them tollways or turnpikes. You must pay a fee, called a toll, to use them. This fee helps pay for building the road. It also helps pay for fixing the road later.

Paying a toll can happen in a few ways. Some drivers stop at a toll plaza. They might see a toll booth or a toll gate. At these spots, a person might collect the money. Other times, a machine handles the payment. You can put money into a machine to open a gate.

This happened under a ruler named Ashurbanipal in the seventh century BC. In India, old books mention tolls before the fourth century BC. Germanic tribes also charged tolls at mountain passes.

You can think of a toll like a ticket for a ride. Just as you might pay to enter a museum, you pay to use these roads. The amount you pay often changes. A small car might pay a low price. A huge freight truck often pays a higher rate. This is because trucks are heavy and have more axles.
