Toxicodendron

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some plants belong to a group called Toxicodendron. This name comes from Greek words for "poison" and "tree." This group includes vines, shrubs, and even tall trees. You may know them as poison ivy or poison oak.

All these plants make a special oil. This oil is called urushiol. Urushiol can cause a skin rash. This is an allergic reaction. Some plants, like poison sumac, are even stronger than poison ivy.

These plants look very different. Poison ivy often has leaves in groups of three. The leaves can be smooth or have teeth on the edges. Other plants, like the lacquer tree, have many more leaflets. Some have up to 19 leaflets on one stem.

People in Asia use some of these plants. The lacquer tree makes a sap used for lacquer. This is a shiny coating. Other plants make a fat called Japan wax. People used this fat to make candles. This wax helped the candles burn without smoke.
