The Chinese lacquer tree grows in parts of Asia.

It can grow up to 20 metres tall. Each leaf has many small parts called leaflets. Most leaves have 11 to 13 leaflets.

People use this tree to make lacquer. This is a hard, shiny coating. To get it, people tap the tree trunk. They cut 5 to 10 lines on a 10-year-old tree. Then, they collect the greyish yellow sap. This sap has a substance called urushiol. Urushiol is an oil that causes skin rashes.

Workers filter and heat the sap. They may also add colors. They use iron oxide to make black or red finishes. People paint the sap on items with a brush. To make it dry, they use a warm, damp room. This helps the urushiol polymerize. This means it changes into a hard surface. It stays waterproof and glossy. People use it on pens, bows, and bowls.

Some people use the leaves and seeds for medicine. The fruits can also make Japan wax. People steam and press the fruit to get it. This wax is used for candles.
