Toxicodendron

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The genus Toxicodendron is a group of flowering plants. This name comes from two Greek words. One word means poison and the other means tree. This group includes many different types of plants. You might see them as woody vines or small shrubs. Some members can even grow into large trees. These plants are very important to study. They can cause strong skin reactions in many people.

Every plant in this group makes a special oil. This oil is called urushiol. When the oil touches skin, it can cause an allergic reaction. Doctors call this urushiol-induced contact dermatitis. It is a painful skin rash. Some plants in this group are more powerful than others. For example, poison sumac is more virulent than poison ivy. This means it causes a stronger reaction.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. Philip Miller published the name for this group in 1754. These plants are part of the sumac family. They were once grouped with a genus called Rhus. Now, many researchers believe they should stay separate. This is because the groups are very complex. More study is needed to understand them fully.

There are 29 accepted species in this genus. Western poison oak is very common in western North America. It is even the most common woody shrub in California. In the United States, poison ivy grows east of the Rockies. It can grow as a vine up to 10 meters tall. The lacquer tree can grow even larger. It can reach heights of 20 meters. These trees are found in places like China and Japan.

People have found many uses for these plants. In East Asia, the lacquer tree provides a special sap. This sap is used to make a durable lacquer. People also use the wax tree to make Japan wax. This is a solid fat used for making match sticks. In the past, people used this fat to make candles. These candles were special because they burned without smoke.
