Many different cultures around the world have similar ideas. They use these symbols to show who they are. Some people even use the term to describe a personal spirit guide. It is a way to connect people to something sacred.

Different groups use totems in many unique ways. For the Anishinaabe, totems are linked to the heart.

Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders use totems to describe these bonds. A person might have many different types of totems. These can be personal, family, or even gender-based. Some groups, like the Ngarrindjeri, link clans to specific plants or animals. In the Torres Strait, people use terms like augud for their totems.

Many scholars have studied these traditions for a long time. Émile Durkheim thought totems helped keep a society close together.

A.R. Radcliffe-Brown had a different view of how they worked. He thought people used nature to help organize their communities. Other thinkers, like Alexander Goldenweiser, noticed that different groups use totems in very different ways. Even today, experts continue to study how these symbols connect people to their history.
