Total war is a very large type of conflict. It happens when a country uses every resource it has to win. This includes all its money, food, and tools. In these wars, the line between soldiers and regular people becomes very thin.

This means that cities and homes may become targets. The goal is to use everything to support the war effort. This can make the war feel like it involves everyone in the nation.

Experts study total war to understand how it works. A researcher named Stig Förster identified four main parts. These are total purposes, total methods, total mobilization, and total control.

Total mobilization means many people join the effort. This can include women, children, or people who are not soldiers. Total control happens when a small group of leaders runs everything. They might control the news, schools, and even the economy.

Many people have written about this idea over many years. The phrase became popular after World War I. A German general named Erich Ludendorff wrote about it in 1935. Some people look back even further to older ideas of war. In 1793, France used a huge number of people for its wars. By that time, their forces grew to about 800,000 people. This was the first time such a large army was used in Western history.

History shows many different examples of these types of wars. During the American Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman used a "hard war." He wanted both armies and people to feel the war. In World War I, planes were used to bomb cities for the first time. A leader named Peter Strasser helped lead this new way of fighting.

During World War II, many cities faced big dangers. The Siege of Leningrad was a very long and hard time for people there.
