A war effort is a way for a whole society to help its military. It is a coordinated plan to use many resources. These resources include things made in factories and help from regular people. A war effort can be small or very large. It might involve only a few industries or it might control all of society. This helps a country support its soldiers during a war.

This way of working involves making big changes to how a country runs. Sometimes, things that people use every day are used for war instead. This is called conversion. It is needed because materials like steel, rubber, and aluminum become hard to find. Large armies need many specialized materials to function. Making these choices requires a lot of organization and many workers. This group of tasks is why the term "war effort" was created.

In the past, people did not always help in this way. In feudal societies, most people were peasants. These peasants often thought war was only for the aristocrats. They did not feel they had to help the leaders win. This changed as the idea of a modern state grew. Now, people feel that war is everyone's business. This includes everyone, even those who are not fighting.

The idea of a general mobilization started a long time ago. Leaders during the French Revolution used it to protect their government. They called for a movement to stop monarchist forces. Later, other countries like Russia used this same idea. The United Kingdom and the United States also used it. They used these efforts during World War I and World War II.

A war effort can also help businesses grow and invent new things. The military might hire a company to make resources. For example, the military could contract Boeing to make things. This can lead to new technology and innovation. Civilians also play a huge role on the "home front." This means that people working in factories are also helping to win. Their hard work can be the difference between victory and defeat.
