It stars the famous dance team Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. In the story, Astaire plays Jerry Travers, a tap dancer who travels to London. He meets Dale Tremont, played by Rogers, and falls in love with her. The plot involves many funny mistakes and chases through London and Venice. The movie is celebrated for its wonderful dancing and lovely music. It is considered a classic part of American cinema history.

Making the film involved many talented people working together. Director Mark Sandrich led the production while Irving Berlin wrote the music. Berlin was a famous composer who wrote songs like "Cheek to Cheek." He used a special piano to help him create his tunes. To make the film look magical, designers built huge sets. One set featured a winding canal with water dyed black. Another area was a giant stage called a piazza. It used bright, candy-cane colors to look like a fantasy version of Venice.

Writing the script was a big job for the creators. Dwight Taylor was the main writer for this specific story. He worked with Allan Scott to rewrite parts of the movie. The story may have been inspired by older books. Some people believe it came from "Scandal in Budapest." Others think it was based on "A Girl Who Dares." Even though some critics did not like the script at first, the movie became a massive hit. It was the most successful film for the Astaire and Rogers partnership.

Top Hat was a huge success when it first came out. It cost about $620,000 to make in 1935. After it premiered at Radio City Music Hall, it earned $3 million. This made it the most profitable film for RKO Pictures in the 1930s. The film was so important that the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in 1990. This means they protect it because it is culturally and historically significant. It even appeared on lists of the greatest film musicals ever made.

Many people still remember the special moments from this movie today. The song "Cheek to Cheek" is one of the most famous songs in film history. Other movies, like The Boss Baby, have even used parts of it. There is also a famous story about Ginger Rogers' costume. She wore a beautiful dress covered in ostrich feathers. During a dance, so many feathers fell that they covered the floor. Because of this, Fred Astaire gave her the nickname "Feathers."
