Fred Astaire was a famous American dancer, actor, and singer.

Many people call him the greatest popular-music dancer of all time. He performed on stage, in movies, and on television for 76 years. His dancing was very special because he mixed many different styles together. He used tap dance, classical dance, and even ballroom dance moves. He called his unique way of dancing his "outlaw style." This meant he followed his own instincts to find new moves.

Astaire learned his craft through many different steps and teachers. He began as a child performer with his sister, Adele. They performed in vaudeville, which was a type of traveling stage show. They learned dances like the tango and the waltz from a dancer named Aurelio Coccia. Fred also studied the piano, the accordion, and the clarinet. As he grew up, he became a perfectionist with his choreography. He spent a lot of time planning every single step of a dance.

His father, Fritz, moved to the United States in 1893. The family moved to New York City in 1905 to start show business. Fred and Adele changed their last name from Austerlitz to Astaire. They wanted a name that did not sound like a famous battle. By 1917, they were performing on Broadway in a show called Over the Top. This was a patriotic revue made for soldiers.
