Bob Fosse was a famous American dancer, choreographer, and director. He was a leader in jazz dance during the twentieth century. His work changed how people moved on stage and in movies. He had a very specific way of making art. This style was called modern and uncompromising. People remember him for his unique energy and skill.

Fosse created a special way for dancers to move. He used many unique gestures in his shows. Dancers would snap their fingers or roll their shoulders. They often used "jazz hands" to express themselves. His dancers also turned their knees and toes inward. They might do a sideways shuffle or a move called the "Fosse Amoeba." He often used props like canes, chairs, and bowler hats. He even used gloves to help with his performances.

His journey began in Chicago, Illinois. He was born on June 23, 1927. His parents supported his love for dance from a young age. He started formal lessons when he was only eight years old. By the age of 13, he was already performing professionally. He toured with a group called "The Riff Brothers." He also performed in many different types of clubs. In 1943, at age 15, he choreographed his first dance number.

Fosse won many of the highest awards in show business. He won nine Tony Awards for his work on Broadway. He also won an Academy Award for Best Director. This was for his famous film, Cabaret, in 1972. He won a BAFTA Award and three Emmy Awards too. He even won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. His work included many famous shows like Pippin and Chicago. He worked closely with his wife, the dancer Gwen Verdon.

His career moved from the stage to the big screen. He started as an actor in musicals like Call Me Mister. Later, he became a very successful film director. He directed the movie Sweet Charity in 1969. He also directed the film All That Jazz in 1979. This film was partly about his own life. His final film was a movie called Star 80. Fosse passed away on September 23, 1987.
