It sits on the north bank of the Tagus River. The river flows in a big bend around the city. This shape makes the location very strong and easy to defend. Some people think the name Toledo means "raised" or "elevated." Others believe the name comes from the way the river meanders.

The city is the capital of the province of Toledo. It is also a very important seat for the government of Castilla–La Mancha.

The city has been a home to many different groups. Long ago, it was a settlement for the Carpetani people. Later, it became a major city for the Roman Empire.

The Romans built walls and a large circus there. This circus was huge and could hold 15,000 people. After the Romans, the Visigoth kings made Toledo their capital. In the 8th century, the city changed hands again during the Islamic conquest.

This name comes from a time when Christians, Jews, and Muslims lived there. During this period, the city became a center for learning. Scholars worked together to translate books. They turned texts from Arabic and Hebrew into Castilian. Then, they translated those into Latin. This helped important knowledge spread across Europe.

However, this history was not always peaceful for everyone. There were times of great hardship and religious conflict.

In the later years, Toledo held great political power. The Spanish King Charles V stayed in the city many times. He even gave the city its own coat of arms.

The city was also famous for its silk industry. Later, the economy changed as power moved to Madrid. Even so, Toledo remained a place of great beauty.
